I'd highly recommend either Delphi,C++ or VB if the app must be
standalone. For that matter, any of a host of Scripting engines will also
expose COM automation to you so that you can use ADO and Jet.

The one thing I'd warn you against is to use the method in which Access
applications are developed and distributed. Despite what you'll read in
the books, these apps always promise much more than they can deliver and
the resulting headache when you discover your standalone app is being
shared amongst 10 people on a network and is constantly corrupting the
database...well, it's a damned ugly moment in your career.<g>

The Visual Studio approach using a data object is sufficiently abstracted
and transactionally marshalled to free you from most of those surprises.
