>It would mean MS is dumbing down their software instead of finding solutions to accommodate more people. That's a proven and often used technique...and Microsoft has used it many times before. In fact, the creation of Windows is all about reducing the amount of knowledge you *have* have to use the system and reduces the old question of "where are my files?" The same is true for programming in this environment. With the advent of Windows, developers no longer had to know both the hardware and sofware interrupt schema, they no longer had to develop their own video and printer drivers (which were always buggy as hell anyway), and they all could use a standardized API to the system because the required knowledge threshold is so much lower. The method used is called abstraction. Removal of a feature which appears to be data loss makes for bad news. So, unless they can come up with a way to abstract the behavior and make it more easily understood, it's one that likely will not reappear. This is the one that burns me the most: 3) My email views typically use an "unread" filter. In XP, I could click on the "mark as read" icon and have a msg or group disappear from view. Now it only is marked as read and remains visible until I leave and return to the folder. This makes my reading routine more cumbersome. Diane P in the outlook group suggested that MS removed this action because some users got confused! If this is true, it's depressing. It would mean MS is dumbing down their software instead of finding solutions to accommodate more people. Another "change" that I've discovered is the inability to drag a message in the message list pane and drop it on another message to change the subject line to match the latter messages. Now it plain doesn't happen. Sigh..... ......Peter -----Original Message----- From: mso-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:mso-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Dian Chapman Sent: Friday, October 31, 2003 4:55 pm To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [mso] Re: My Outlook 2003 nits Noted...I'll pass your suggestions on to the Office team. However, I am dismayed at what was changed or removed. It seems like MS thought the new viewer pane was the cat's meow. If on the right, it seems space is not an issue within the pane. However, it is impractical to keep the pane on the right if you also like to have the folder tree and message list panes open unless you have one of those wide screen monitors. So back to the bottom right my viewer pane goes with overall loss of space as described below. 1) The header information in the preview pane needs to be customizable, particularly as to type size. It takes up much more space than it used to. 2) When messages are grouped, the group header line is much thicker than it used to be again taking more space than is necessary. 3) My email views typically use an "unread" filter. In XP, I could click on the "mark as read" icon and have a msg or group disappear from view. Now it only is marked as read and remains visible until I leave and return to the folder. This makes my reading routine more cumbersome. 4) MS added useful info to the status bar when send/receiving, but took away useful info from the Send/Receive Progress box. 5) I wish there was more ease of use added to views management. Particularly, the ability to modify a view and apply the changes to every folder currently using that view.
