operating kept all my programs on the desktop in that other OS which shall not be named. However, I find with the Mac I keep all my apps in Dock, which ids just a VO D away all the time, and I keep aliases for new projects on the desktop. Aliases work like shortcuts in that other operating system etc. That's just me, though.
