Hi Keith and all,

Thanks for the pointers.

Yes of course you get a lot of loop tied up in knowledge of jaws,
windows etc. I just have too much of an ongoing workload to cut straight
over, which I'm sure if you can is the best way to do it. The podcasts
on Blind Cool Tech were influential in persuading me a decent minimum of
accessibility was already available. My sighted research students are
avid Mac users and are somewhat in "we told you so" mode.

Two quick OT plugs for anyone interested: Firstly, we do research into
designing auditory displays and in representing data in sound (called
sonification). There is a whole community into this kind of stuff,
called ICAD, International Community for Auditory Display, if interested
have a look at www.icad.org

Secondly, in our auditory display research we make a lot of use of a
program called Super Collider. You can use it to synthesise sounds,
compose music and a very wide range of other things. Because it supports
Open Sound Control you can develop apps which are distributed across a
number of machines, for example I believe one of our colleagues in
Germany recently built an audio tennis game without a real ball which
worked by using force feedback technology on the rackets and
implementing the physics of impacts and motion on a virtual audible
ball.

Super Collider was developed originally by James Macartney for Macs but
there is also now a Windows port available. Its all at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/supercollider/

Unlike some other audio synthesis systems such as Puredata and MaxMSP,
Super Collider is pretty accessible as its language is made of textual
commands rather than patching audio sources and syncs together.

Anyone interested in either ICAD or Super Collider is welcome to contact
me off list,

Best wishes,

Tony

Hi Tony and welcome to the list,

I agree, the service from Apple has been second to no other.

Slides and the like.

OpenOffice is moving right along and is begining to work quite well
with Voiceover. Check it out at,
OpenOffice.org

Music is my pation and we have been doing a great deal of work with
GarageBand. Check out the guides at,

under
MAC with Voiceover.

Tony, I have not used Windows in years and all thoughts of jumping off
a cliff have gone away, grin, smile.
