Hi,
It is nice to stay away from composite video. Analog video adds noise which
make statistical multiplexing not work as well. Also, I’ve noticed that a
solid color background can look bad when converting to composite and back to
digital. I think this has to do with analog having rectangular pixels and the
timing not being perfect. Also, I’ve notice that you can lose dynamic range
when using composite. There aren’t as many shades of gray. If a receiver
doesn’t have an SDI output, then look on eBay for one that does.

Another thought is if it is a SD dot 2 channel, just leave it composite and
pass closed caption. The only advantage to SDI in SD is it gets rid of “dot
crawl” around edges and only one coax. But if you are going to go through a
bunch of converter boxes, the advantages are gone.
If you want to see affects of composite versus HDMI to SDI, record a
multiburst pattern and play it back.

Not sure why this is a problem. If you're airing a subnet like RightNow TV,
you should be doing ad insertion to monetize the channel - otherwise, what's
the point of airing it? So one of the cheapest ways to do that is use
MasterPlay with SDI in / out card. MasterPlay can do your ad insertion AND
your EAS crawl. And this is going to be kept in in HD. You us a $45 converter
to convert RightNow TV's internet receiver output from HDMI to HD-SDI and
you're good to go. No CC, but RightNow TV has already stated that they don't
send out CC.

Some HDMI encoders take composite on the side for closed caption embedding.
Sometimes HDMI from consumer devices won't talk directly to encoders. Usually

Hi folks!
I was hoping everyone could help me understand some LPTV basics.
I've been partner now in a diginet for over two years. One thing I'm not
understanding is the fact that almost all of our affiliate stations, when we go
to ship them our playback device, almost all of them request a composite output.
Composite is analog.
The output of the playout device is digital HDMI.
The broadcast standard is digital.
So aren't the affiliates taking a digital output, converting it to analog, then
converting it back to digital again?
Why is this done? Is it because many folks don't have HDMI encoders?
