Another reason why trench warfare was supplanted by Blitzkrieg is 
technological.

Blitzkrieg didn't really come into its own until rapid, mobile platforms 
were technically possible in WW2.

Note that the idea is to limit engagement along lines of combat. The 
longer the line or time of an engagement,as in WWI, the more casualties.

Technology drives warfare to more limited engagement with the enemy.

        Trench warfare kills more than Blitzkrieg.

        Blitzkrieg by itself kills more than Blitzkrieg plus "smart bomb 
technology."

(Of course this only applies to conventional battles, not to total war 
with weapons of mass destruction. I don't think I should have to qualify 
this, but I might as well put it here.)
