One thing I'd like to know, though, is what happens to all those cars people are urged to "donate" to nonprofits.
As Robert suggested, donated cars get sold at auction. I have donated two cars. I talked with the woman from Habitat for Humanity. She was just someone with an office someone out where overhead is cheap--the Dalles, I think-- who collects checks that the auction houses send. My sense was that she would end up with a fraction of the value of the car.
I wish Craigslist were a better method of distributing unwanted stuff. My found poem about it tried to convey the strangeness of the lies I read on our local version of that list: "like new beamer, showroom cindition just needs, paint, breaks and a tune up."
