LH>Our poverty line is $8,900 per person. The average GDP per person in Brazil, for example, is >$8,400. The **mean monthly income** in Brazil in 2002 was = US$132. A poor person was one who lived in a household with a monthly pc income of less than =US$ 70, an indigent, less than =US $40. Does that mean the US person with $8400 a year/$700 a month is 10 times as well off as the poor person in Brazil, and 17.5 times as well off as a Brazilian indigent? Perhaps. We need to know about the cost of various items to be sure. (I doubt it.) Judy Evans, Cardiff, UK
