Mark Foley was going after 16 year olds. 16 year olds are children. Sex between 16 year olds is fine. Sex between a 16 year old and a 30 year old or 50 year old is, to put it mildly, dysfunctional. That cultures institutionalize dysfunction doesn't make it other than sick. I would bet most of the world would think that this is an absurd premise, that sex with power differentials is perfectly natural. But it's why the world is the mess it is. (Stalin at 34 fell in love with a 12 year old. He stayed in love with her until she killed herself. I thought about reading a biography of his wife. There's a new Russian movie about their relationship but I have no access to it, at least not at the moment. But Stalin falling in love with a 12 year old kind of says it all about how 'normal' that is, doesn't it?) For Eric, the ideas about our military aren't mine. They're Tom Ricks'. William Cohen (Clinton's Secretary of Defense, a Republican) is the one who suggested they're thinking about outsourcing desk jobs and sending those people into battle. It also leaves unanswered why our guys are doing multiple rotations, wounded, PTSD, the works, they send them back. Instead of two years in between rotations, it's been shortened to one year. If we have plenty of troops, why do these things? ----- Original Message ----- From: Judith Evans To: lit-ideas@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 10/28/2006 9:38:36 PM Subject: [lit-ideas] Re: [SPAM] Soap Opera Politics >In Belgium (?) they voted on legalizing sex between men and boys In Belgium, the age of consent is 16. >>>>>>>>>>> "All indecent assaults on modesty committed without violence or threat, by a person or by aiding the person, of a child of either sex, aged less than sixteen, will be punished by imprisonment (of five years to ten years)." <<<<<<<<<<< In the US, the age of consent varies (by state) between 16 and 18 (I believe the state laws that gave an age of consent of 14 for girls have now been invalidated). I.e., there are US states where the age of consent is the same as it is in Belgium. > Unfortunately, it happens here too, but at least here people go to jail for > it. and here; and in Belgium; and in France; and in Germany; and in Italy (etc.)
