Quoting Phil Enns <phil.enns@xxxxxxxxxxx>: snip > What follows from the belief that kids and culture are stupider today? I offer the following soundly drawn conclusions: 1. Dumbed-down university courses and grade inflation. 2. Really bad television shows. 3. Subscriptions to Time and The Walrus are excluded as possible gifts for your teenage children. 4. The belief that the next generation will be stupider than the present generation. (Yes, it's a self-replicating belief.) 5. Entrance requirements to teacher education programmes are fewer in number: $1500 and a heartbeat. 6. Professional scholars write their journal articles on Air Canada flights (domestic). 7. Politicians feel more comfortable being interviewed by journalists (and conversely). 8. The TV series *Get Smart* is made into a movie. 9. The belief that religious fundamentalism will gain a toehold in both popular culture and the Supreme Court. 10. Military historians are thought worthy of the Kyoto Prize. (Just rattlin' Lawrence's chain, of course :) 11. More courses on French philosophy are offered by philosophy departments. 12. Nobody recognizes the line from DieHard I used by Grueber to illustrate "the benefits of a classical education." 13. Increases in the price of gas and cigarettes. 14. Fewer garbage cans at rest stops along the Trans-Canada Highway 15. Physicians no longer require voluntary and informed consent from patients facing major surgery. 16. Adults require a license to have kids (and sex). 17. Gun control is viewed as a waste of time. 18. BurgerKing competes for the contract to provide the lunch menu at all schools in California. 19. Upon retirement from office, George W applies for a tenure-track position in political philosophy at Stanford. (He is short-listed.) 20.
