Anecdotal evidence is my favorite kind. To gather a bit, you might like to try out the following test on some students today. It's the 1932 Entrance Exam for Chicago Normal College. Give it to the average high school senior of today and see if they could get into a teachers' college in 1932. Of course 1932 was not a particularly popular year for people getting into college, but it might be interesting to get reactions from today's students to these questions.
