Up here in Canada, my son made the tall president's favourite chili recipe for dinner. Happy 4th to all. It was once my holiday, but now my heart beats higher on the 1st.

That last line of yours, David, put me in mind of long-ago-Larry's post once about how the boys were throwing the stones in fun, but the frogs were dying in earnest.

one daughter is currently out earning money the other is reading words on the couch
neither is doing right by the holiday
on lake oswego this evening we'll abandon residual suspicion of sirens anthems and flags
surrender to myth
trust in god high notes and fireworks
under spacious skies our necks will stiffen
and like corn beneath the moon
we'll wave at the tall president on t.v.
who smiles convincingly
promotes fatherhood
kills flies like a wanton boy
