Here's an area we recently had trouble with

We were getting totally flat areas where they should have been close to flat.

The new algorithm is essentially done now, so if anyone has shapefile contours they would like me to use for incorporating a vector input, I'm happy to give that a whirl. ESRI shapefiles are easiest; other formats I'd have to enable OGR in GDAL and do some extra coding.

Speed improvement over the old Deterrace is only around 15-20 percent, not as much as I hoped; but the accuracy is definitely better. Artifacts are also resolved much better on tightly convoluted areas.

Those wanting to give the new Deterrace a whirl can download it from:
http://www.daylongraphics.com/products/leveller/plugins/download/deterrace.ltf

(backup your existing deterrace.ltf file if you want to keep the old one.)

The sample screenshot at

was updated showing some fixes. The contour lines are still a bit visible but this is due to slope changes. Blurring afterwards of course helps out.

Hi Ray, one of the problems we have is that we have contour maps which can have huge distances between them (in the xy plane). Global Mapper, while having other advatages such as being able to handle very large datasets, does seem to leave large flat areas. Would this algo help avoid that?

Would this algo be able to interpolate for eg shp file contours (presuming shp file support)?

A new algorithm for the Deterrace plug-in is under development. When completed it should be both faster and more accurate.

The above sample (1000 pixels square) shows the preexisting contour lines, which are handy as a reference but technically should not be present.

Unlike the old algorithm, large terrain resolution and/or large plateaus do not leave flat unprocessed areas; every pixel gets fully evaulated.
