You can save the multitrack with disc or analog tape as well.  If you
have 24 tracks, then you make twelve stereo discs, each with two tracks
preserved.

Not economical, not the best playback either.  They cost around $15,000,
must be maintained in precision alignment, and can not play anything
other than black vinyl, with the possible exception of black shellac.
Colored vinyl, clear vinyl, etc, all cause problems for playback.

Sound quality is good, but because of the nature of light beams instead
of physical surface to surface contact, any spec of dust sounds like an
explosion, making the playback painful if you don't have a really good
wet-vacuum cleaning system.
