Re: updating JAWS

What you say is correct. My workaround is to retain the .exe file for each update I download on my system. If I'm dissatisfied with a later update, I uninstall it and reinstall JAWS from that old .exe file.

That said, my system never seems to go back exactly to the way it was. Some of the difficulties I encountered with the uninstalled version creep back when I return to using the earlier one. For example, I have a problem that some, but not all, JAWS users experience with "blank" being spoken for letters, phrases and sometimes whole lines in work that I'm editing. One JAWS 8 update solved that problem. The next update brought it right back, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled the update that had worked for me. Too bad. The "blank" phenomenon was back.

So now I face the same dilemma. JAWS 9.0.552 has once again solved the "blank" problem, which I don't want to upset by installing the current upgrade. JAWS 9.0.552 has other problems that the new upgrade may have fixed, but I can live with them if it means I don't risk losing an accurate report of what I've written while I'm editing.

Note. When uninstalling JAWS in the past, I have always refused the option to delete shared files. Judging by recent comments on this list, I needn't have been so cautious. Even so, I regard reverting to earlier updates as risky.

I'm unclear about something. Some folks are saying, as I hear with every new release and update, that if you don't like the way the update works for you, you can always go back to the previous build.

Well, of course if I don't care for Jaws 9 at all, I can always remove it from the startup group by unchecking that item in the options menu, then go back to using Jaws 8 if it's still on my hard drive.

But when you update to a new build, rather than a full new version, doesn't the update process modify and overwrite your program so you have nothing to go back to unless you reinstall Jaws 9 from the CD or maybe do that famous system restore I've never performed?

Thanks to anyone who can clarify this. Yes, I'm asking because I'm hesitating to take the update. From the list of additions and bug fixes I've seen in a couple of email posts from FS, it doesn't sound as if any of the problems I have with jaws 9 and have reported have been addressed at all. So the only reason I'd install the update would be because next time I need tech support, they'll insist that I be running the latest build.

Thanks again.
