You put the program disk into the CD drive, and the slow-talking guy
comes on. When the program is installed, you're prompted for the
authorization CD. Mine put in the numbers automatically.

I will coment though that you will need sighted assistance for the
registration and setting up your new computer as I do not know how you
would
install jfw prior to this step.

Subject: RE: two Jaws questions before buying a computer

you'll need to find the instructions (I think in the jaws help) about
how to configure xp initially for best performance with jaws.
Do not bother jaws works fine with xp right out of the box no need to
worry about all that configuring changing things that fs seems to think
you need to do. I have just set up xp with jaws many many times with
out doing any of that other stuff and it worked fine. =20
A bigger worry is any new computer, as we have spermatic reports here of
some computers not working with jaws. It's best to buy from a source
that will allow you to return it without a financial cost to you, should
you happen to run into a problem.

Now, your next natural question is can anyone tell you what not to buy?
The answer seems to be no, at least in my opinion. You could get others
to tell you what they had trouble with, but, for each person who says "I
had trouble with brand X of video card or pc", you'll find others on the
list here who are using it fine.

Jaws 6 appears to have fewer problems like this than earlier versions,
so do try it if you don't have it, in case you run into any problems.

I really enjoy having XP (much more than win9x) and you will to, once
you learn it's slight differences.

If you aren't going to have sighted assistance setting this up, you
should know that with xp there's a built-in screen reader, which you can
invoke with the keystroke windows key plus the letter U, which may help
you in getting past any initial dialogs and starting the jaws
installation process. You can then close down the narrator and utility
manager windows so you don't have dueling speech output.

Just let me on my soapbox for one second: my advice is to buy a laptop
not a desktop pc. It's more money, but it's so much more flexible, that
it's really worth it.
