Jean,

You can always start out with a single sound card system, and add a
second one later if it turns out to be a problem. It's often not the
problem this poster describes, as the controls for base boost, etc., are
often located in the software playing the music, not necessarily in the
sound card driver.

I have a standard sound card built into my IBM ThinkPad laptop, but I
also bought a usb surround sound card, with headphones, so that I just
plug it in and the system automatically switches to the surround sound
card and headphones when I want to play a particular game that uses
surround sound. The jaws speech is fine, even though it too is coming
from this surround sound card (which is not really a card, but a very
small box with a short USB cable).

That's another minor point, with the advent of USB, almost any
peripheral you need these days can be purchased in a USB version, and
need not be a card inside of your pc. I'm using a USB Ethernet adapter
for my TiVo, and the USB sound card I mentioned, and a USB WIFI printer
driver so that I can print from anywhere in the house (depending on
where I take the laptop (just had to give that one more plug <smile>)).
With a laptop with WIFI, and a high-speed internet connection, you can
serf the net from anywhere you care to roam around your house and
grounds. WIFI internet service is now being offered on many commuter
trains, restaurants, and even some cities (like mine, Tallahassee, have
a WIFI canopy for the entire downtown area). I believe some airlines
are now considering offering it on their flights.
