Hi Addison and list,

Well, I finally figured out the problem we are all having getting this
audio clip to play. I contacted Paul Crawford, Online Director at the
Charleston.net; his E-mail address is:

pcrawford@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

He told me that the dialogue message always shows up and all we have to do is
click on the Play button. The problem, which he doesn't seem to understand, is
that the Play button is a graphic on a Windows Media Player bar, which is also
a graphic, so there is no text for JAWS to recognize.

I had sighted help here today and, together, we found a way to get to that
Play button with JAWS. Incidentally, I also tried to label the graphic Play
button using the JAWS labeller, by pressing Insert g; this worked at first, but
now it doesn't, so I have to use the following instructions; if anyone can help
with this labelling problem, please let me know:

1. Click on the following link:
http://www.charleston.net/news/2008/apr/05/boys_call_helps_mom_but_slows_ems36197/

2. Find the heading, "Audio Clip," on that web page and press Enter on the link
just below that heading that refers to the boy's 911 phone call.

3. Now, when you get the dialogue that we all got previously, Route JAWS to PC
and put the JAWS cursor at the beginning of the following line, on the letter p:

Posted April 8, 2008

4. Now, cursor down once and you will hear, blank.

5. Next, cursor right 4 times, which should put your JAWS cursor right on the
Play button.

6. Left Mouse Click at that spot and the audio clip should start playing right
away.

I am now going to write Paul Crawford and request that they put text on the
WMP bar and, specifically, on the Play button so that screen reader software,
such as JAWS, can recognize it and thus make their audio clips accessible to
those of us who must use such adaptive software. I urge others of you to write
Paul as well and maybe he will think about doing this for us.

    Happy listening!

    Don

Hi Addison, chances are your computer came with one, Windows Media
Player. I think from about Windows ME this programme came preinstalled and thus
you were able to play MP3's and many other audio/video files out of the box.
However, if you don't like Windows Media Player, then you can go to
www.winamp.com and download a copy of Winamp. You could also go to
www.vuplayer.com and download their free and very accessible player, simply
called VuPlayer. Hope that helps.
