Thanks Ray. The default setup was to put computer on standby when I pressed the power button. I changed it now to shut down and it works like a champ. I didn't know that WinXP and newer computers worked this way.

I was holding down the power button to force a shutdown. I knew that wasn't a good idea but I didn't
know what else to do.

I know several people who's systems are not configured to safely shut down when briefly pressing the power button. I'll have to tell them too. This is very important information.

Hi:

Try pushing and releasing your power button quickly. Depending on how
your system is set up, it should shut down the computer. Don't hold the
power button in or it will shut off the computer without properly
shutting down windows, you do not want to do that.

How do we force a shutdown when the system stops talking and we can't
read the Task Manager? My new computer gets into a state where I can
not shut down with windows key u u. or by ctrl alt del alt-u u.

Is there a better way to shut down safely when the system seems to hang?
