oops, I think this is wrong. for windows XP, in the shutdown menu would be

stand by, button
turn off, button
restart, button
hibernate, button
cancel, button

your direction:
windows key and then the letter u and press the enter

this only will bring to stand by option.

the correct one is:
windows key, a letter u, and another letter u.

Try pushing and releasing your power button quickly.  Depending on how
your system is set up, it should shut down the computer.  Don't hold the
power button in or it will shut off the computer  without properly
shutting down windows, you do not want to do that.

How do we force a shutdown when the system stops talking and we can't
read the Task Manager?  My new computer gets into a state where I can
not shut down with windows key u u.  or by ctrl alt del alt-u u.

Is there a better way to shut down safely when the system seems to hang?

WinXP 2005 media edition on HP Pavilion amd 64 3200.
