The normal.dot is in your personal templates directory, not the templates that come with word. The adobe add-on is only present if you have purchased the full acrobat writer, not just the free reader. It's somewhere in the MS Word program dir structure. Go to this area and look for a dir named startup (mine is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup) but it will vary depending on your version. Another place for templates which run at startup is in your user profile area (mine is C:\Documents and Settings\corange.PSC\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP but that will vary with your setup for login preference and user id if any). Finally, your normal.dot is in your templates dir (mine is C:\Documents and Settings\corange.PSC\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates, again this is in your user profile area and will vary on how your login is setup). Anything in these two startup directories, along with the normal.dot, will all be loaded (and possibly run programs) when Word is first started. In addition to Word itself, it could of course be an anti-virus/anti-spyware program scanning everything as it's opened, a slow hard disk or one that needs defragging, or insufficient memory so that you end up using virtual memory. If you're infected with Malware already, this too can cause your system to run quite slowly (so a good scan by something like spybot search and destroy is in order). Sorry for the long list, but a lot of different things can make a large program like Word run very slowly on your system. hth, Chip ------------------------------ Chip Orange Database Administrator Florida Public Service Commission Chip.Orange@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (850) 413-6314 (Any opinions expressed are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of the Florida Public Service Commission.) ________________________________ From: jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jfw-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of John Ramsey Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2007 10:56 AM To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: Microsoft Word and JFW Hello Chip, I used to know where the normal.doc was stored and I thought it was in the templates folder but I cannot seem to find it anymore. Also, do you know what the adobe plug in is that might cause this dreadful problem? If so, what folder is it normally stored in? I will let you know if I am able to fix the problem. Find it and delete it (with Word not running), and restart Word. This will automatically create a new one. Note that if you've written custom macros or styles they are stored in this normal.dot, and this will cause you to lose them. Most people don't, but if you did, you'll have to take steps to save them first. You could rename normal.dot instead of deleting it. There are other Word add-ons which place .dot files into a directory where Word automatically opens them upon startup; any of these could be corrupt, or could be slowing Word down upon starting. One that we've had trouble with is automatically installed as part of the full Adobe suite. As someone else mentioned Norton installs another one. If you find any of these in a directory named startup, you could rename them to see if that solves the problem. Please let us all know if you find the answer. Word takes at least one minute or longer to open and close. It does this from an existing document or if I open Word from the desktop. I also have a laptop with Word 2002 and XP home with JFW 7.1 on it and Word opens and closes with ease. I have 2gb of ram on the desktop and only 512mb on the laptop and both are Pentium 4 processors, so there is no major differences in processor performance. Does anyone have any ideas on how to speed this up?
