Hello Judith,
I meant to say that I choose to delete or permanently delete the items as i
read and close them in the inbox. I know I have to do this one at a time in
the deleted items folder. However, as I read messages that will have no real
importance, shift delete will allow me to keep them from residing in the
deleted folder at all. If I have not been clear about the items I want to
delete please let me know.

John, Please excuse my ignorance but if you want to delete only selected
emails why don't you go into the deleted items folder and get rid of them as
they show up? I know it is a pain but I don't know of a keystroke that will
discriminate. The only way outlook knows which ones you want to get rid of
is for you to delete them individually. However, I am open to being proven
