There are certainly examples of technology which is way too expensive and
GPS products are one such example where we pay 6 or 7 times the price of
what sighted people do. Amie, have you tested any of the other
screenreaders to see if they are less invasive in an audio environment than
JAWS? In other words, is this a jaws problem or a problem with the
techniques required for us to access the screen?

I do agree to some extent with you but you have still not really dealt with
the question of how these access products and the people who manufacture
them are to be paid. Who sets what is a fair rate and how? Access to work
will almost certainly save itself a fortune due to this spending review and
the fall out from it. It will however be us that pay I suspect by there not
being the equipment we need. The tories have previous as far a s this one
is concerned.

Personally I think that the best approach would be to insist that products
such as PCs must be accessible to all. We have proved that the free market
is unable or unwilling to take care of this so regulation is clearly
needed..

Hi

No kind of expert, but am partner to a sighted software developer and
high-end writer and user of very technical audio production software.
Whenever he has to use my pc for anything, and consequently runs into JAWS,
he always ends up in a fury. He says it would be inconceivable, considering
the adverse effect JAWS has on the soft environment it operates in, such as
slowing the pc, making the screen flicker and destabilising everything, for
any program in the mainstream to go out at anything like the extortionate
price JAWS is sold for. I don?t think JAWS should be compared to other
access products because the access tech? market is an unprincipled rip-off
altogether, but should rather be compared with mainstream equivalents. From
the mainstream perspective, the pricing of JAWS is a very poor joke, sad to
say.

Don?t wish to go far o-t with this, but as an additional note, I?ve just
made an ATW claim to switch from using a Braillenote Empower to an Apex. I
did this because I was told, on the phone, by tech? advisers, that the Apex
comes with a very usable and effective sat? nav? as standard. I hate
carrying the bulky Trekker about with me so jumped through all the hoops to
swap two gismos for one. It was only when I went back to the supplier to
order the Apex that I was told, not only that the sat? nav? is not standard,
but also that it costs a cool £900! £900 for a key to unlock software which
is already installed on the machine, and a little Brother sat? nav?
receiver. Wonder, am I the only one who seriously thinks this kind of
disgraceful over-pricing should be illegal? The government could save a
small fortune from the ATW budget if they made a law to force access tech?
suppliers to stop behaving like gangsters.

A

These arguments about JAWS pricing are interesting as despite what some have
tried to argue here, some of the practices used by FS are sadly not unique
in the fielt of IT as a whole. This being said, I do not know many
products that charge more just for running in business editions of Windows
like JAWS does without offering any extra features (unless you pay even more
for them at least. I don?t think it would be asking that much for example
to have Tandem Direct free with JAWS Pro!

Sadly, signing for Braille displays from other manufacturers and charging
them for the privilege is not a practice unique to JAWS. You have to pay
for example to get symbian programs signed to run on any symbian phone.
This is quite expensive for developers. Given the small size of the market
for screenreaders, I think this practice is smacks of greed. If FS had not
sued GW Micro over place markers, this would have left plenty of money for
FS to sign many more Braille displays at no extra cost.

I understand FS is effectively owned by a private equity company. In many
ways I would like to see FS owned by people who take a real interest in the
business. These equity companies have no interest in individual businesses
from an emotional passionate point of view. They just want to make money .
Providing a good product, decent technical support and appropriate research
and development is a necessary hastle for these private equity companies to
exist in order to give products some kind of money making future but there
the interest ends.

Hi. If that is indeed the case, and not just your own personal understanding
that makes FS even less competetive than they'd had people believe. Oh, I
forgot, they don't believe in competition, do they! Their motto seems to be
"If You Can't Beat Them Sue Them".

Glass half full:
Professional is the normal cost and you can get a discount by using a home
version of the windows OS.

Yes, Jaws pro is a total rip off, and I feel it's more like, they sat me on

Lots of ifs, but, if you are going to use this MSDN AA for a limited period
of time, and you have a spare computer which you can put a pro MS product on
it, you could use Jaws in forty minute mode on that spare machine.
Otherwise, I am afraid I can see a free spike next to me here or you can
join Tiddy's barrel, which ever you prefer.

Sorry about the dry sense of humour this morning!

Cheers,

I think we all agree that Jaws Professional is a rip-off, but they?ve got
you over a barrel and know it. If you want/need to use the MS professional
products, you?re stuck with having to use Jaws professional, unless you can
find some alternative screen reader? and this isn?t the place to discuss
such things without getting your knuckles rapped for going off topic.
