Thank you Ian the silence mode is a great discovery for me.
If my wife is helping me jaws drives her mad, I have been unloading and re-loading jaws, mind you I am a computing idiot.

Assuming you have version 12 (definitely) or (I think) version 11, You press JAWS key+space and you will hear a click. Press s and you will be told "speech off" or "speech on".

The problem here is the terminology. This function is called sleep mode but if you don't know that it is called sleep mode then finding the function you
need is of coursed tricky.

Also not everything is yet in the settings centre and I am not sure why they
didn't do the whole lot.

Don't get me wrong, there is an awful lot wrong with freedom scientific due
in part to the fact that as I understand it there is a private equity
company involved which is perhaps more concerned with creaming off the money from the business rather than ensuring everyone is paid and left over cash
all goes into development. Some recent law suits have been expensive and
not in our best interests. JAWS has also become rather large and it is
probably in need of a rewrite at some point.

In the subject of the interface, while the settings centre is easy, layered
keys using insert space bar seem far from intuitive and easy to remember.

I wanted to mute Jaws during a particular program. I know it took a lot of
searching with the old system, too, and theoretically this should be much
better, but I couldn't find it.

I've said before, that, for once, Jaws 12 did have a couple of useful
features - this and the option not to mention links during a say-all of a
web page.

What were you looking for?

I'm just curious as to me it seems very straight forward indeed but maybe
this is because I am now used to using the search box on the start menu of
windows 7.

Surely introducing easy-to-use guidance on something as central as settings
is rather a stroke of basic common sense than genius :o)

To an extent this is true but System Access does have some very severe
limitations which users of all screenreaders, including JAWS would notice.
It is important to be able to control verbosity, to determine how much
information you are given and how it is presented to you. This is necessary whether you are a home or a work user and this is one of the key weaknesses
of system access. It doesn't really have anything in the way of
customisation of verbosity.

Years ago Freedom Scientific did bring out a cut down version of JAWS called
Connect Outloud which was aimed at home users. This screenreader only
worked with a limited number of applications however and different users
have very different wants.

The ;point is that no one can deny that developing a decent screenreader is
expensive. An Open Source solution is one very good way of providing a
good free to use product giving those who need a screenreader a degree of
equality. It is however difficult for beginners to get a decent level of
technical support and some aspects of the product such as documentation or
tutorials are not necessarily of decent quality.

I think that over all it would be better if Microsoft bought out a
screenreader. The company would need to have the right attitude and the
need to continuously develop the screenreader concerned would probably need to be backed up by legislation. Ideally this would be the JAWS screenreader as it is the most popular. Even if JAWS was rewritten, its user interface has always been a strength and in no situation is this more true than with the new settings guide which takes almost no time at all to get used to. It
could harldy be simpler to find what you need and this is a stroke of
genius.

actually system access does what you need buy it once and never pay for
sma's ever again and it uses pretty much all of the jaws keys since the
layout is based on jaws.

I've been using Jaws for about 14 years now and find it very good.
Having said that, I'm familiar with it and it may well be that if I

It does appear that Jaws is overpriced (it would be great if you just
paid, once for it and you got all subsequent upgrades free without the
need for SMAs etc).

I'm not going to ditch it yet but would certainly welcome an expansion
of choice and, as Graham mentions the incorporation of screen reading
software into all PCs would be a very welcome development.

JAWS for Windows is becoming an increasingly large download and I do find myself wondering if it is not time that JAWS had a rewrite, dropping more

the legacy support. It is wholly reasonable for example for JAWS not to support anything older than Windows XP which has now been around for over
9
years. As many people have said though, there is now little if any
justification for the differences between JAWS standard and JAWS
Professional and JAWS Pro should in my opinion be dropped and JAWS should
be
sold at the same price as the standard virsion, working with all
operating
systems. In the longer term however, the PC should go the same way as
the
Mac with a screenreader included as standard that really works. Only
when
we reach this stage can we even begin to talk about equal access to
computers. Some vendors and manufacturers would go out of business but
that is just tough luck. This may be eutopia rather than a realistic
possibility but lets just say that if Microsoft were to purchase one of
the
existing screenreaders and employ an appropriate amount of development
staff
so the screenreader could be shipped with windows it would make things
very
interesting indeed. JAWS would be an obvious target as it probably still
has the largest user base.

Subject: [jaws-uk] Why I am not going to use JAWS

Hello all.
I will publicly state why I am refusing to use JAWS. It is Freedom
Scientific's attitude towards pricing and their license schemes. Some of us can't or won't afford to buy JAWS, especially if the free one is just
as good as JAWS. As for the license scheme, the user is punished to
license JAWS on up to three machines. With the free and even other
commercial screen readers one can install on as many computers as they
have so long as one machine is used at a time, no questions asked. With
JAWS, once all three authorizations have been used they would then have
to request FS for more keys. Eventually and I will say eventually they
will refuse flat and get paranoid about people sharing authorization
keys. I understand piracy and all that and I certainly don't commit to
any of that stuff however at the same time FS is just asking for money
and not caring about the customer. True there is a dongle option, but
even they can have their fair share of problems. Now for the technical,
I do find the free one to be actually more stable and even works with
more applications than JAWS. You may find this shocking but this is true
according to my personal experience.
On a positive note, I would like to publicly thank the guys at Sight and
Sound. They have been really helpful in answering my JAWS queries, even
though the suggestions may not be what I was looking for. It's better to
have good communication rather than nothing at all. So thanks, and keep
up the great works.
Take care.
