My particular difficulty was that my problem needed some input from

Have you checked for errors during the boot sequence? It sounds
very much
like something is going wrong, and that will prevent other random
things
from working.

installing Reporter, and then let us know if you get any errors
reported.
Had old version of Reporter which didn't run. Could only download new
version on the Mac, which auto-unzipped the zipfile, and so altered
all the filetypes... haven't yet discovered how to download onto the
Mac without it unzipping...
But can now do that - so will report back if I get new Reporter AND
some useful info.
