The process is not as simple as it sounds. You cannot waiver the VAT
at the store itself, i.e. no duty free shopping available in stores.
You must pay the full price at the store and claim the VAT back later.
The VAT counter at Heathrow never opened its doors on time (for me
atleast), and I never managed to get a VAT refund. There is the
option of filling up some forms and doing the entire process through
the post, but thats an entirely different can of worms.
Does the same customs problem hold true in the case of getting it from
Singapore ?? I plan to get one from Singapore through my cousin. Can't she
get more than one from there as shes planning to get one for her ? My
friend said IBM Thinkpad T series some latest stuff costs 1800 Sing$. And
he also said tht the avg salary @ singapore is 2000$. So, for them its
quite normal rate to get a laptop. That comes around 47K if we do a direct
conversion. :) Think, the same laptop in india would costs around 60k -
80k ?!
