Hi,
I recently bought an IBM THINKPAD R51 2887 MQ6 Laptop. I did some googling
for Linux compatibility of laptops. I found that thinkpads are famous among
the linux community.
I didn't intend to upgrade in near future. So i wanted a model with
512 MB RAM
DVD Writer
80 GB Harddisk
Centrino processor
Thinkpad R51 is the one model that has all these features(almost) and within
my price range.
But i had to make some compromises.
Thinkpad R51 features
512 MB RAM is DDR (not DDR2)
DVD writer
60 GB HD (instead of 80GB i wanted)
1.7 GHZ Centrino processor
No pre-installed OS ( no problem here)
Cons :
No Windows key
No wide screen
You cannot increse the volume more than certain extent. (of course you
can attach an external speaker or headphone)
I have bought this for 56,500 in chennai. If my budget is slightly
higher i would have gone for higher end models in thinkpad but nothing else.
Other laptops
Featurewise i am impressed by Hp pavillion laptops though i don't
have any hands on experience on them.
A recent model in lenova has all the above features but no DVD
writer. It has a built in camera.
PS :
I have installed Fedora Core 4 and it is working fine. And waiting
for Fedora Core 5 DVD.
Best of luck,
Regars,

Is this from Lenovo or was it bought earlier from IBM?
Wait... my laptop is a T43 - the integrated fingerprint reader is a
required feature at my company. The T43p is the one that is latest and
greatest.
In any case, I believe T41p is the last from IBM, T42 onwards are all
from Lenovo.
