The vga=771 will work if the video driver supports
this resolution as per your X configuration file -
/etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config depending on
whether you are using Xorg or XFree86, respectively.

the 'vga' parameter passed to the kernel during boot-time is the
console-mode which is used by the framebuffer device (if one exists)
and is not connected to CPU arch or Xfree86/Xorg.
