Do I have to do anything for the image to specify

it will get detected automatically?
When you compile the kernel, you have to choose the
processor and system type that you have.
In both 2.4 and 2.6 Linux kernels, it will be under
"Processor type and features" when you do make
menuconfig.
Actually for booting from
Debian i am passing
a parameter vga=771 to the kernel. I have tried
giving this parameter
also for the compiled one.
The vga=771 will work if the video driver supports
this resolution as per your X configuration file -
/etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XF86Config depending on
whether you are using Xorg or XFree86, respectively.
Regards,
SK
