I'm guessing you mean resizing existing partions when you mean "adding
memory to hard-disk". Here is a link.

If you have a single root partition you have to unmount the partition
before resizing it. Consider using Knoppix for resizing it in that
case. If you are not resizing the root partition consider gParted
which is the GUI front end for parted.
