On this computer the CD cache is disabled. IIRC, 128 MB RAM is considered too 
little.

On this computer the CD cache is enabled, and 1 GB should be plenty for it to 
actually work, too.

On these two, I think the CD cache gets enabled, but 256 may turn out to be 
not enough for it to work correctly? Ingo?

Listing the contents of the .zip I still have of r488, it should be 20993020 
bytes. Is that what it shows on the computers that work?

I guess with dd and pipes, or by reading from the raw device. (md5sum 
/dev/disk/...). But I think the problem is something else anyway.
