The common meaning of beta is feature complete but buggy, while alpha is
not feature complete. Consequently the development process should change
with the beta. I.e. we should create a branch in which only bug fixes
are accepted and which should ultimately lead to the final R1 (likely
with a few betas on the way).

While I agree with you on the alpha vs. beta front, I don't think we really have to follow the beta development process that strictly. If a new feature is ready to be included, and it's something nice, why not include it during beta? While beta means (planned) feature complete, it doesn't mean we cannot introduce new features at all IMO.

While I agree that bug fixes should be the majority of the commits in the beta branch, I would only see it that strictly once we get to the release candidates.
