Thinking the idea through a bit more the most appropriate real-world analog for a font I can come up with for a font would be a block of moveable type. Here is an example of an picture of moveable type that I found online: http://image.shutterstock.com/display_pic_with_logo/185104/185104,1208813038,1/stock-photo-old-metal-movable-type-compose-the-word-peace-11783599.jpg I agree with Axel that a capital letter "A" would be the most recognizable choice, so, my suggestion is to make an icon that resembles an "A" block of moveable type as a generic font icon. I'm sure you could make something nice looking in the semi-oblique icon perspective that we use as there are many examples of icons that contain block shapes already. Once this is done alter this block of moveable type icon for each font type by putting a "TT", "Type 1", "OpenType", etc. overlay on top similar to have we have different flags for compression types on a generic compression icon or document overlays on a generic document icon. As far as Fontboy goes I would not be so quick to dismiss it, however, it's license would need to be first determined, and secondly we'd need a sponsor to bring it up to our Haiku coding guidelines and quality standards before it could be included.
