Hi,

Maybe I don't quite understand your vision yet. With HaikuDepot Server,
we wanted a system where anyone could become involved. Not only with
providing package translations and screenshots and that stuff, but also
with quality management. Eventually, there could be staged repositories
(bleeding edge, testing, stable) and packages would transition between
these repositories based on some form of user feedback/stability rating.

I'm afraid that by creating a parallel effort to HaikuDepot Server, there
will be a barrier to getting involved (users stay consumers).

The webapp/app portal/webstore would retrieve all the icons, screenshots,
rating, descriptions and all content from HaikuDepot Server, so it would be
more of a supplement to HDS than a parallel effort. HaikuDepot Server would
be remain the business end, while the webapp would provide a webstore like
interface for end users to discover GUI applications.

If there is any overlap then it would be with HaikuDepot Desktop, although
even here installation and dependency management would be handled by
HaikuDepot Desktop after a hpkg:// handshake, so it is more of a short cut
that opens up HaikuDepot Desktop with your intended application dowload
ready to download and install.

If you have Ubuntu installed somewhere, you can get a similar experience by
going here and clicking the download button to install VLC in Ubuntu:

Regards,
Richard.
