Precisely.. and a long enough signal chain can begin to amount to computation.

To illustrate my point, look at something like Reaktor which uses a large
graph of simple, plug-in-like objects to create customised virtual
instruments. Is that a "routing" or a "computation"? :)

Assuming that the input and output lengths of an object may not match, I'd say "both."
