I think Bill was just talking about the proper way to do it in DX.

I'll also admit to circumventing it in every plug I've ever written, be
they VST, AU or DX, but only out of laziness and because I could get away
with it. However, I do think that GMPI will be cleaner and better in the
end if the GUI is completely isolated from the DSP code and communicates
only via the host.
