Try this...

 

xvattr -a XV_CRTC -v 1

 

This sounds like an xv overlay issue... the command above should switch the 
overlay output to the secondary display (use -v 0 to set back to primary.) I 
believe the XV_CRTC attribute is specific to the xf86-video-ati driver (should 
be what the compaq evo n600 is using) version 6.7.191+ (VL 5.9 appears to use 
6.7.196.)

yes both have been set to 1024x768
