Wow what better way to describe the events than in poem, thanks Tom!
I am glad I wore gloves now, after thinking about the Industrial Giant.
Ted Hughes couldn't have put it better himself.

MLK LAB - FREE GEEK MICHIANA UPDATE
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

12/3/02

Tom Brown, Mike Cook and I rescued somewhere between 40 - 50 monitors and as
Goose has no doubt realized by now, they are stored in the garage space he has
kindly donated. Goose, can you give us an exact count when you get a chance?
We also got to meet a nice dog named Ferdoo, and spend some time in the frozen
tundra.

Got to the lab about 3:00 so I would be sure not to be locked out. Printed up
some FGM brochures, and looked at some config files. Jake got to the lab about
5 and immediately started hacking away on some ideas he had. One great thing
he did was fix XFS so the clients can find fonts better. After he fixed XFS we
were able to play this game called gcompris which would be great for the
headstart kids that come to the center.

Richard one of the FreeBox test subjects came in about 5:30, and told us how
his daughter is having fun with the FreeBox, and has used it to connect to the
Internet. Me and Richard talked for a while and he told me how he is a retiree
from NIPSCO and he is not interested in working ever again, but he seems like
he wants to do something with his time. I asked him if he would be interested
in doing volunteer work for FREE GEEK, and he asked me what that would entail.
Told him I am not exactly sure at the moment. He also said he has some space
in his basement available, if we get into another storage crisis.

After Rich left, Beverely called and said she was busy but her husband came
down and swapped FreeBox's with me, she wanted to use Open Office and I did not
install it on the box she had. So there is a 166 FreeBox that works pretty
good, running RH7.3, Gnome w/ abiword. I have a couple people who have
expressed interest in the Adoption program so I can get it off our hands.

We need to create a very simple database to keep track of the FreeBoxen and put
it online so anyone can update it when you give out a box. I have plenty of
webspace, only lacking in skill w/ databases and time.

Still haven't had much time for the FGM website, Tom informed me that Michiana
freenet has confirmed that they are going to give us:
http://community.michiana.org/freegeek
I think that is a good starting url, and don't think we should even bother with
registering a domain anytime soon. Will concentrate on getting a site
together.

Geek out,
John
