Maybe you're not typical of other people. I've known Steve Solomon for as
many years as he has lost track of. I wouldn't discount the advice of
someone who has raised tens of millions of dollars and rebuilt some very
damaged relationships while doing so.

There are more ways to do everything than you can count. My own
professional experience has been that *real letters* (vs e mail) with a*
hand written note before signing*, mailed in an *unusual sized envelope*
often with *something else inserted*, all helps to get the attention and
appreciation of the donor. For me , it has worked, Good luck.

I totally don't agree with Mr. Solomon, with all due respects. When I
get paper thank you's in my post box I simply tear it up as soon as I see
what it is - for the same 'time restraints' reason.
Whatever the case, we're left with THE basic dilemma of our profession -
and that is - how to get the donors to sit up and take notice!!!!

We send a receipt for tax purposes at the end of the year and the thank
you letter by e-mail is really just to keep up good feeling/relationship

What do people think - is a hard copy essential? For us it would mean

You are already really late on the thank yous if you are talking about
thanking people now for donations made in December. So maybe you will do
both - on-line which you can do instantly with a mail merge email, and
then
follow up with a paper thank you.
Presumably major donors each got a personal thank you already. If not,
I would call right away to thank, apologize for the delay and touch base.
