We are living in a age of e mail overload. If the purpose of a thank you
letter is to show appreciation and thus to nurture the relationship with a
donor, e mail thank you letters do not fit the bill. many e mail
recipients will not even open the e mail, sufficing to read the incoming
line. Some may even get lost in spam and still others will simply delete
during the daily effort to trim down the mailbox of non essential mail
before spending their precious minute on reviewing important e mail.
Sending a paper note almost guarantees that your supporter will open and at
least look at what you wrote and that also gives you a chance to do more
than just say thanks. You can let your donor know how their gift actually
helped "*feed one child lunc*h" or "*paid for a medical appointment*"
or "*covered
the cost of mailing an advocacy letter to Capital Hil*l", etc.
Pound wise is penny foolish.
Obviously not applicable to the smallest of your donations.

You are already really late on the thank yous if you are talking about
thanking people now for donations made in December. So maybe you will do
both - on-line which you can do instantly with a mail merge email, and then
follow up with a paper thank you.
Presumably major donors each got a personal thank you already. If not, I
would call right away to thank, apologize for the delay and touch base.
