It depends
If you are already sending out an end of the year letter it is worth it to
write a personal note on each one.

We send a receipt for tax purposes at the end of the year and the thank you
letter by e-mail is really just to keep up good feeling/relationship etc.
What do people think - is a hard copy essential? For us it would mean
sending overseas which is costly (8nis a letter)

You are already really late on the thank yous if you are talking about
thanking people now for donations made in December. So maybe you will do
both - on-line which you can do instantly with a mail merge email, and then
follow up with a paper thank you.
Presumably major donors each got a personal thank you already. If not, I
would call right away to thank, apologize for the delay and touch base.
