Alex, This may not be what Shaun means, but at my site we don't have ethernet to every Modbus or Allen Bradley PLC in our network, nor do we want to. For instance, with Allen Bradley, I have an ethernet gateway some of my controlnet and/or DH+ networks. I have one IP address for my ethernet gateway, it would be very convenient be able to address different devices on this network even though the IP address (gateway address) is the same for all. Allen Bradley software and hardware has no problem with this concept.
