You can use OCR software to scan a pdf directly to obtain the underlying text.

As usual, your mileage may vary.

I have had very ood experience with AABBY software to OCR pdf files and convert to Word files. Their product is called Finereader. Their website shows that they are up to version 10.

You will need to open the file in Adobe Reader, and provided the text is not an image of text, save it as Text.

You will then be able to open the .txt file in DBT or Word.
