As far as I know if the battery is dead you can still use the Dectalk on AC.
I have a few Dectalks here with pretty much dead batteries.  For some
reason, you have to wait a few minutes after plugging them into AC before
they will actually work.
As for replacements, if you live in North America, a store called Batteries
Plus can probably help you.  Just take the Dectalk in or, better yet, if
you're feeling brave, rip the thing apart and remove the battery and take
that in.
