Well, the current version of SurfaceReader won't work with versions of Jaws
16 or later. I'm going to try and address this over the next few weeks, as
I've had some time come free.

Thanks for the info Tim, will have to give your app a try with the universal
pro, as I've yet to try it. Last time I did it was with the BCF2000, but not
extensively.
On the OSc note, I asked Can the same thing, if we could write an XML file
that would give us access to other none RME devices, still waiting to hear
back from him. I would also love to see that be the case, as the demo I
heard sounds like this would be a great tool.

Just to add to this, the amount of access possible is determined by the
control surface protocol being used. If you're comparing the Mackie Control
Universal/Pro to the BCF2000/XTouch in Sonar/Samplitude, then you'll almost
certainly configure the units to use the Mackie Control protocol. This means
that the information being made available will be the same, regardless of
the specific hardware being used. Any differences will be down to whether
the physical device offers a complete set of buttons, etc. in order to
trigger the maximum number of responses from the DAW. The MCU, by
definition, has a full set of buttons, V-Pots and faders to implement the
Mackie Control protocol, the BCF2000 has a cut-down set of controls and I've
not tested an XTouch, so can't comment.
The other vital point to realise is that, for any given protocol, the amount
of feedback to be gained from any given DAW is down to the programmer(s) who
wrote the protocol driver for that DAW. For example, Sonar's Mackie Control
protocol implementation is very good indeed and sends lots of text data to
the display on a Mackie-compliant device (even if that device doesn't have a
physical screen, as with the BCF2000). This means that we get a lot of
feedback with Sonar. However, Reaper's default Mackie protocol driver is
pathetic and we get almost nothing of value, despite the fact that we're
using the same hardware and protocol as in Sonar.
OSC is a completely different protocol and is not available for the Mackie
units (at least to my knowledge - I'd love to be wrong) and I'm not sure if
Can's OSC client can take advantage of user-generated XML device
definitions, or whether it's currently limited to the RME units. I'd really
like some clarification on that point - I'm a big fan of this application
and, if it's generic, it's even more exciting.

Mike, that's being explored right now, no definite answer yet on which would
provide better accessibility.
The question is if anyone has tried either of these units with Tim's surface
reader, if they even work under that program.
Just so we cover all corners and all areas lol.
But as of now, nobody (at least on this list) has said, (or at least I
certainly haven't), that the Behringer would provide more accessibility than
the Mackie, or that the Mackie would provide more than the Behringer. As we
all know, options are wonderful things, and thus I'm exploring these now, as
I'd personally like to know, and I'm sure some of my clients could benefit
from the info as well ;)
Once I find anything out I'll let you guys know.
