Hey!I didn't mean to come across as "vague", I was just passing comment, and mayI add, a very important one! A DAW is not the place to be using E-mail, or browsing the net, and I thought that this was common knowledge! If you buy a system for audio, from any reputable retailer, he/she will tellyou not to use the computer for anything else than registering installed apps, or updating said software! When I bought my system, I was a relative novice in terms of using Computersfor music, and I was in an incredible rush to get up and running, (it's a long story, and I won't bother anyone with it now)!I was given the assistance of a tutor from the college at which I'd studiedMusic Technology, to set up my home studio. Unfortunately, and totally unbeknownst to me, this character, had neither, advised me about, or installed Anti-Virus or Anti-Spy software! I took it on myself, to install AVG, having heard about the threats of certain viruses etc., however, I was totally unaware of the threats from Spyware, (let alone what it was, or what it could do!). Anyway, to cut a long and very stressful/painful, for me personally, story short, my computer fell victim to a Bot net!A Bot net is the kinda thing, that if you met it in the street, you'd wannaset fire to it, and watch it burn very, very slowly indeed... It uses your computer as a kinda outpost, in order to send other crap to thousands of other poor unsuspecting computers everywhere, and in the process alters settings deep down in your computers registry and bios, in order to make it easier for it to carry out it's evil intentions... All I knew, was that my computer was doing some very strange stuff to me,like software all of a sudden uninstalling it self, files going awry, and stuff simply failing to work!I was fortunate enough, to be rescued by an ex-military hacker, who helpedme re-format, my C and D drives, luckily, my E drive was OK, (this containedall my Cakewalk Projects, as well as about 30 Gb of samples! He installed a software app called Zone Alarm, made by a company called, Zone Labs, this cleaned out everything nasty, and left my system ready to be reformatted, then recovered, using the manufacturers boot recovery software, which fortunately, I had managed to save off to an external hard drive!Don't ask me why I saved this, I guess someone or something was smiling downon me that day... That's all I can say Mike----- Original Message ----- From: "Phil Halton" <philhalt@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, February 23, 2007 5:25 PM Subject: [ddots-l] Re: OT: Formatting computer advice pleaseMike, could you please be more specific about what exactly happened to your DAW by running internet apps other than software registration? I think this is an important topic. Important enough to warrent detailed information. Others could benefit from detailed information--but not from vagueries. Are you reffering to Spyware? If so, did you use spy sweeping software regularly? Was it ineffective? Please elaborate. I'm getting a new laptop DAW and intend to install Webroot's SpySweeper software on it and generally keep it off the internet, but I'd like to learn as much as possible about the dangers the internet can pose to a DAWs performance.----- Original Message ----- From: "Mike Christer" <m-christer@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, February 23, 2007 10:49 AM Subject: [ddots-l] Re: OT: Formatting computer advice pleaseHey David! I've just been thru the same thing, but was fortunate enough, to have a professional fix it for me, but just one salutory word of advice... If you can at all help it, never run any internet crap on your audio computer, especially a web-browser, apart from registering software etc. That's how I got screwed in the first place, and it was a very long drawnout slow death for my OS and the rest of my DAW! I keep getting dropouts, even when recording just one audio track for only three minutes. I thought you people would be quite knowledgeable about what I should and shouldn't do in regards to formatting, pre, post and during. Any advice would be gratefully received. I do use my laptop for the internet as well as for audio use, though audio recording is my primary function on the computer. I am running windows XP. The first question I have is about the best way to format the computer. I can't remember if its possible to format within the recovery/boot CD that comes with the laptop (soney Vaio) or from my computer. If I'm not running any programs from my D drive which is a partition all ready set up by the makers of the laptop which is my audio drive, is it advisable to format D as well as C or just C and defrag D?I'll ask more questions as and when but any extra advice would be great. Thanks David Eagle ** To leave the list, click on the immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:ddots-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=unsubscribe] ** If this link doesn't work then send a message to: ** ddots-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** and in the Subject line type ** unsubscribe ** For other list commands such as vacation mode, click on the ** immediately-following link:- ** [mailto:ddots-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx?subject=faq] ** or send a message, to ** ddots-l-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the Subject:- faq -- No virus found in this incoming message.
