Dear Mr Ferries, I too am not sure why anyone would want to use an unapproved pipe syste= m, but maybe I can explain, form a pipe manufacturers point why alternativ= e materials are being considered. If fire sprinklers are to progress into the general new build of domest= ic housing, as built by the likes of Barratt, Persimmon, Wimpey, Bovis, Westbury, etc, then a flexible pipe system will need to be approved for= domestic use. (I agree that it should be in conjunction with fast actin= g sprinkler heads). The reason for the need of flexible pipes is due to modern construction methods, the use of fabricated joists, through whic= h it is very difficult to pass a length of copper any more than 1m in length= , but through which a polybutylene or PEX pipe can easily be pulled in lo= ng lengths. In most of this housing traditional copper systems have almost entirely= been replaced by flexible plastic plumbing systems. The contractors are= now used to working with these materials and can easily obtain them from builders merchants. I will not however, enter into the debate on the merits of one type of system over another, i.e. water mist and sprinklers. Is the cost saving so great? The mate= rial content in the piping alone for a typical residential system is quite small, and all of the approved materials are quite easy to install. In view of= this, why take the risk? As a matter of interest, I'm not aware that any piping material has bee= n tested and/or approved for use on water mist systems. No doubt our wate= r mist system members will let me know if I'm wrong. =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D Residential Sprinkler Forum Archives: //www.freelists.org/archives/dd251 WebSite: www.dd251.org.uk To unsubscribe from the list, send an email to dd251-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe" in the Subject line or unsubscribe from the website www.dd251.org.uk _______________________________________________________________________= _ This e-mail has been scanned for all viruses by Star Internet.
