Apparently the reason it looks so naff in the trailer is because of the
lighting system.  The whole game is supposed to be dark and atmospheric,
but they realised too late that once the player activates certain lighting
sources it ruins the look of the game.  They tried to change it midway
through development but didn't quite succeed in pulling it off.

The difference between the early and later builds is really noticeable.
