There are things that they really should teach people in school that they don’t.
Everyone should learn basic contract law. This would stop a whole lot of people 
from getting screwed over because they signed something that they didn’t 
understand. This is especially important considering how our national credit 
act works.
The second thing they should teach people is how to budget, including how 
interest works and the time value of money. Show people what they’re actually 
paying. Help them to understand how saving will work and how to manage on a 
limited budget. You can do this at a young age. It’s the practical use of maths 
that they need to get into people’s heads.

90% of the maths that I learned has done nothing for me (personal life, not 
work life). Once you actually do some vaguely advanced maths – I mean matric 
level stuff like Riemenn sums – you can see how it can be used, especially if 
you’re doing physics at the same time. For the rest, you don’t really need it. 
When last did anyone here need to calculate the volume of a sphere?

I do understand that you need a proper maths base before you head to the 
advanced stuff, and I’m sure people who know a lot more about teaching than I 
do have thought about this, but I do wonder why school maths isn’t more 
practical.

I think I'd be more fond of maths if I could have applied it practically at a 
young age.

Despite not being the greatest fan of it, if I can apply something logically 
and have it make sense that way, it sticks.

maths that we did for comp sci was discrete structures. It doesn’t match 
anything that we did in school – more logic than calculus or algebra. Google 
‘strong induction’ for an idea of what it is.

I will review models and try to track down issues – could be lousy macros, poor 
maths or just bad model governance. That’s more my style than straight 
programming.

You have to assume that they can hack basically anything since they've obtained 
source code to hardware firmware.  These hacks go way back to 2001.  Noone 
knows what they're capable of now.  And you still have to consider the 
capabilities of Russia, China, Europe and Israel.
