What is your interest in Collaborative Law:
I have been a family lawyer since 2001 and am working toward transitioning
my family practice to collaborative family law and mediation only. I have
now handled three CLF cases, have a couple in the works.
I have mediated several family law cases in 2013. Woody and Kevin's
recently training provided me the tools to move in this full time
direction.
I am revising my practice and (will reword) my web page to focus on
collaborative; but my commitment is to change and I focusing on the
process. Currently, I have two associates and three clerks; so this
transition will take me time. My goal is to personally stop taking
litigation cases by the end of this year and then to change my practice
entirely in two years. My experienced associate is a great litigator who
focuses on domestic violence cases, but I am unsure how to go forward
regarding her employment. My second associate, who also handles some
family issues, but focuses on bankruptcy. This firm structure may or may
not be a conflict and bankruptcy has been a good income source. Too often
bankruptcy and family issues go hand in hand and I am glad that I
understand the interaction between these two areas of law that impact
families.
But for me, I want to be done with litigation in family court. I am
excited as recently the chief family judge of the local court appointed me
as a court approved mediator and I see my transition going forward. I am
only a year from being 60, but don't see retiring anytime soon. This
will be my next chapter in my career.
